Malorees Spring Concert

March 5, 2013

As part of their partnership over the past year Greene & Co. are looking forward to their sponsorship of Malorees Spring Concert. Malorees School in Brondesbury Park is one of North London’s top primary schools and also has a particularly successful music department. The musical talent is celebrated twice a year in the school and Greene & Co. have been fortunate enough to be able to contribute to both of these this year. The headteacher of the school, Mrs Fowler, promises ‘An evening of musical entertainment performed by the pupils. Performances will include items from the school orchestra, string ensemble, school choir, rock and jazz bands and solos from exceptionally talented pupils.’

Coleridge School Christmas Card winner announced!

January 22, 2013

Last year Greene & Co. sponsored Coleridge Schools Christmas Card Competition, designed to inspire the young artists of the Crouch End school. The competition received a hug response, but we are proud to announce that the winner was Matthew Bradbery in Year 2. His colourful design was then transformed into Greene & Co. Crouch End’s Christmas card winning himself some Hamley’s vouchers – just in time for the sales!

Coleridge School is a very successful primary in the heart of Crouch End and they have been part of an on-going relationship with Greene & Co. which has enabled some fantastic events to take place including last year’s fireworks display. It is these relationships in the local areas which surround our branches which help Greene & Co. give something back to the local community.

Moors Theatre: Clouds of Grey

January 16, 2013

The first production of Greene & Co.’s partnership with Moors Theatre is in rehearsals and Crouch End gets ready for a night of Tarantino-esque drama. The play’s writer, up-and-coming playwright Set Jones describes his work as a dark and dramatic murder mystery. The audience is promised murder, suicide, kidnap, domestics, gambling and sour deals in a very interactive debut of the material. Moors Theatre performances take place in the normal bar area so it is usual for the whole of the space to be potentially included in a performance. Clouds of Grey will certainly be no exception.

Live in-play music, projections will add to the atmosphere of the performance. Unfortunately due to the nature of some scenes there is a strictly 18+ age limit. Ticket prices online are £8.80 including booking fee and are £12 if bought on the door. Tickets can be bought online at www.ticketline.co.uk/clouds-of-grey/. Doors open 7.15pm and the performance starts at 8pm. Performances will be on the 27th/28th/29th/30th January and 3rd/4th/5th February 2013.

But to last you until the 27th we can give you a little teaser of what is to come from the brochure: ‘When two bodies are found contorted on the streets it is a job for Inspector French and Sergeant Branford. It seems a cold cut case with the arrival of an old villain coming out of prison. But none on the streets know what walks beneath them. Each character is holding secrets, each character is involved.’ Don’t miss out!

Malorees Winter Concert

December 1, 2012

Greene and Co. are proud to announce the beginning of a partnership with Malorees Junior School in Brondesbury. Malorees Junior School is an extremely well regarded community school for boys and girls aged from 7 to 11. Like so many schools in the inner city, they are a multi-cultural school and they reflect this in their curriculum and in the values they seek to encourage. In their last report Offsted describes Malorees as an outstanding school: ‘All groups of pupils achieve excellently and make exceedingly good progress in their learning and personal development. The school is highly inclusive and pupils benefit greatly from an extremely stable staff. All groups enjoy a highly diverse enriched curriculum, are supported very effectively and taught well.’

The School themselves say ‘We have a positive ethos for learning at Malorees, where children can build on their skills and understanding and progress to their full potential. Our aim is to provide every opportunity for our pupils to develop into independent, accomplished and caring individuals.’ Many of their pupils suffer from difficulties with learning, so any money the PTSA can make for school is incredibly valuable.

Greene & Co. has been amazed by the ethos and the hardwork of those associated with raising funds for the school and it because of this that we are so enthused about aiding them as best we can. This year we will be focusing on three events, one of which is a joint event with their sister school Malorees Infants. The first event is their Winter Concert which taking place this week. To help out we’ve made a donation of £1,250 as well as helping out with the design work and printing, so there is nothing left but to wish them the best of luck over the next three days!

Moors Theatre: Crouch End

November 26, 2012

Greene & Co. are proud to announce the beginning of a brand new partnership with Moors Bar in Crouch End. Moors Bar on Park Road has been open since October 2008, and had always played host to a theatrically themed range of nights. But from Moulin Rouge and Caribbean Nights parties they have gone one step further and transformed themselves into a Fringe Theatre. Andy James is at the helm of this bold addition to a burgeoning cultural scene. Before there was no regular fringe theatre space in Crouch End and considering the number of creative people in the area, it was well over due.

But what drove Andy to put his heart and soul (not to mention business prospects) behind the idea? ‘I have been personally involved in Theatre for over 20 years as an actor and as a producer for the last 3 years. I love theatre, the fact that it can take you on a roller-coaster ride of emotions; laughing one moment crying the next. It can also be educational, informative and thought-provoking. We wanted to create a place where good new writing could have a chance to come to life. This I believe we have created, with the first five shows at Moors. We also felt there was a need for a place where small visiting companies could come and put on their work and not feel like they are being ripped off.’

Talking to Andy, and his in-house writer, Seth Jones, you really get a feel of the goodwill behind every project. The plays themselves explore difficult subjects such a mental health, their ethos is bring the community art, while ensuring fair work for actors. I think, underlying this, is a desire to bring themselves and others a really fun night.

‘Moors Theatre is an intimate space where you can really get drawn into a performance. We will put on shows that can go on to be developed and taken out on tour or transferred to bigger venues. We have already developed a good working relationship with the Park Theatre which opens in Finsbury Park next year and also in the early stages of form a relationship with Jackson’s Lane Theatre and The Gatehouse in Highgate. However, the most important thing is to get local Crouch Enders coming in and enjoying the shows.’

When considering sponsorship, you always want to be able to make a difference, and you also want the project to agree with your company’s ethos. So something as full of raw talent and potential as well as goodwill as The Moors Theatre was an irresistible opportunity for Greene & Co.

Tube-onomics

November 16, 2012

The popular blog ‘rentonomy’ is great go-to-guide for what’s happening to the rental market in London. Recently they have started releasing graphs which represent the expense of living along various tub lines. The Victoria line took a fairly symmetrical mountain shaped graph, which is to be expected as it cuts across central London. However the below, which shows the Jubilee and Northern lines, is much more complex.

The Jubilee line services two of our branches, West Hampstead and Maida Vale, whereas the Northern line services Belsize Park and the City, so this diagram is of particular interest to Greene & Co. and our customers. As you can see the graph, although it certainly has a ‘peak’ by no means has a symmetric triangle shape which the Victoria line produced, with the Northern end of the line almost reaching the cost of the City. However just east and west of Hampstead prices do peter away in more predictable way.

On the Jubilee line, where stations of Southwark, Bermondsey and London Bridge don’t mirror their northern counterparts, we can perhaps interpret this to a reason to invest in those areas.

Coleridge Fireworks goes off with a bang

November 12, 2012

A big well done to Coleridge Families for organising their very first firework night last Saturday. Taking place on the 3rd of November the event was attended by over 1000 adults and children from Coleridge School. The event was made possible due to significant sponsorship from Greene & Co., which is part of a long term relationship between Coleridge and the Greene & Co. Crouch End office.

Due to our contribution of £2,500 Coleridge Families were able to raise over £3000 for the school. Due to the success of the event the PTA committee are hoping to make a fireworks display an annual event. The idea to do a fireworks night came because of the closure of the Alexandra Palace Fireworks, which usually provided a place to go for Crouch End residents.

‘I wanted to say a big thank you for the fabulous creative and generous financial contribution to The Fireworks night to all at Greene & Co. Not only did people have a great time at The Fireworks display but we also managed to raise over £3,000 for the school!’ Fabienne Canale, Treasurer of Coleridge Families.

Story behind the property: The Red House

October 22, 2012

Greene & Co. is representing a property for sale in 49-53 Clerkenwell Road, known as The Red House, a historic building in the area.

This building may look like a municipal town hall, but its allure lies in its beautifully formed bricks, which fit perfectly together with just a hint of lime mortar. The bricks are orangey-red but with a base of blue engineering bricks. The man we have to thank for the exquisite brickwork was Mark Gentry, a builder from Essex, who had his own brickworks where he made the bricks himself.

The building was constructed in 1885-7, in the Queen Anne style of the day, for The Holborn Union Board of Guardians as a workhouse and a hospital for the poor. There are two sections to the building: the most ornate part facing Clerkenwell Road, and a plainer one facing onto Britton Street. The property was converted in 1994-5 by Croft Homes, using Michael Sierens & Associates as architects and now contains 21 flats.

The apartment for sale is 2,195 sq ft spread over two floors; the ground and lower ground. The ground floor has been converted into a living space with two bedrooms two bathrooms, a kitchen and reception rooms. The history of the building here provides wonderful high ceilings, original wood flooring, and original windows. However on the lower floor the architecture of the building has left a less conventional legacy. It is one big open space, sectioned off into 6 open rooms with white painted brick arches, with 9 foot ceilings and is currently being used as a gallery. Downstairs there is also access out onto the communal court yard and car park.

The historical features of this building has prevented developers from transforming this unique space into something bland, although perhaps more profitable in 1994. And now we’re left with a treasure, with more potential than ever.
